Once the capital of a largely autonomous Flanders, Aalst straddles the banks of the river Dender and is a rather laid-back place, famous for its thriving flower industry. Photographers won’t want to miss the colorful spectacle of Aalst’s flower market Bloemenveilinghal , which is held every morning in Albrechtlaan. In the Grote Markt main town square the original Town Hall Schepenhuis is a particular highlight for history fiends. Begun in and now the oldest building of its kind in Belgium, this ancient sandstone edifice traces the entire evolution of Gothic architecture over three centuries. A short distance east of the Grote Markt is the Sint-Martinuskerk. The choir and ring of chapels in this church are the work of famous architects Herman and Dominic de Waghemakere who built Antwerp Cathedral. The interior is graced with a collection of outstanding artwork, including the painting St. Roch and the Plague Sufferers attributed to Peter Paul Rubens, which hangs in the chapel to the left of the right-hand aisle. While in Flanders, history buffs will want to take the World War I Battlefields Tour of Flanders from Brussels , which visits battlefields, memorials, and museums commemorating the sacrifices made here. If you’re visiting Aalst, don’t miss dropping in to Moorsel, five kilometers east.
Brexit The EU unveiled its futuristic new million-euro headquarters on Wednesday, saying it symbolised ‘joy’ at a time of rising populist anger against Brussels that helped lead to Brexit. A glass lantern-shaped structure inside a cube made of recycled window frames sourced from across the nation bloc, the Europa building has been dubbed the “Space Egg” because of its otherwordly appearance.
At its heart is a huge room decked out in psychedelic rainbow carpets and ceiling tiles where European Union leaders will hold their summit meetings on the multiple crises that beset the bloc.

Robert Adams was born in in Orange, New Jersey. He lived in Colorado for a long time before moving even further west to Oregon. His interest in literature and large stretches of wilderness pushed him to definitively adopt photography at the end of the s. His photographic work, that since then has demonstrated both the essential role of nature in our existence as well as the part we have played in altering it, has been widely published and exhibited.
These images were all taken in and around Denver, between and , in a reaction to the nearby factory producing plutonium detonators used for nuclear and thermonuclear weapons. The standpoint here is aligned more closely with that of a child, the camera is concealed and the images cropped. A small spark of spontaneity emanates from these tender and animated photographic portraits, counterbalancing our fear of a potential and unspeakable catastrophe.
How do we cope with what frightens us? These photographic images by Robert Adams help us, fuelling our resistance and resilience. Joshua Chuang, Jean-Paul Deridder.

A new customs arrangement to be drawn up removing the the need for customs checks and controls between the UK and the EU, as if in a combined customs territory. The plan put forward today would see the UK form an associate agreement with the EU, would effectively keep the UK in the customs union and single market for goods, and could allow EU migrants to work in the UK without a visa — albeit on a temporary basis.
Effectively staying in the single market for goods, but not services, is unlikely to be an attractive proposition for the EU. Likewise, introducing a time-limited aspect to EU migrants wanting to work in the UK waters down the principle of free movement. If the UK can secure this deal, then what is to stop other countries wanting the same arrangement? But at least it is a plan.

Digg Brussels wears three impressive hats, as the capital of Flanders, Belgium and Europe. It started life as a fortress, then developed into a market square and eventually blossomed into the economic, political and social centre of the Flemish capital. Here is a list of our suggestions: In the Middle Ages wooden houses were built around the market and by the 14th century wealthy families took to building stone mansions which led to the market developing into the main commercial administrative centre.
The town hall came in and by now it was also a political centre. This is where dukes, royalty and emperors were received but the square was also the site of executions. It is a great place to hang out and admire the elegant guildhouses which replaced all the wooden homes. Many have admired its beauty including Victor Hugo and Baudelaire who rhapsodised about its charm and appealing looks. There is a daily flower market between March and October and often accompanied with concerts and a light show in the evening.
Every two years, during the third week of August next one will take place August , Belgian begonia cultivators decorate the Grand-Place with a beautiful flower carpet using around , begonias.
