Definition[ edit ] The term describes a range of filmmaking styles that are generally quite different from, and often opposed to, the practices of mainstream commercial and documentary filmmaking. Avant-garde is also used, for the films shot in the twenties in the field of history’s avant-gardes currents in France, Germany or Russia, to describe this work, and ” underground ” was used in the sixties, though it has also had other connotations. Today the term “experimental cinema” prevails, because it’s possible to make experimental films without the presence of any avant-garde movement in the cultural field. While “experimental” covers a wide range of practice, an experimental film is often characterized by the absence of linear narrative, the use of various abstracting techniques—out-of-focus, painting or scratching on film, rapid editing—the use of asynchronous non-diegetic sound or even the absence of any sound track. The goal is often to place the viewer in a more active and more thoughtful relationship to the film. At least through the s, and to some extent after, many experimental films took an oppositional stance toward mainstream culture. Most such films are made on very low budgets, self-financed or financed through small grants, with a minimal crew or, often a crew of only one person, the filmmaker. Some critics have argued that much experimental film is no longer in fact “experimental” but has in fact become a mainstream film genre. First, the cinema matured as a medium, and highbrow resistance to the mass entertainment began to wane. Second, avant-garde movements in the visual arts flourished.

Agnostic to energy origin or ownership, these artifacts redirect their captured energy through a variety of means including expressing it and storing it for later reacquisition and usage. Using expressive balloons and air quality sensing clothing individuals engage in otherwise socially unacceptable behaviors such as overt public voyeurism, gossip and curiosity. Through new signage, sensing technologies, and urban interactive screens, issues of ownership, authenticity, authority, activism, and grassroots participation have been critiqued.
This project is focused on exploring new ways of experiencing and interacting with and through energy in everyday contexts. These artifacts promote new forms of emotional engagement with and attachment to energy. This work speculates on the emergence of new sociotechnical energy regimes—including decentralized modes of energy production and consumption. Objects of Wonderment repositions these devises as central elements in a participatory urban authoring toolkit.
There is also a curiosity, perhaps even verging on a voyeuristic interest in the lives of our fellow urban neighbors.
Abstract Background In the field of video game violence experienced serious reversals with repudiations of the current research by the US Supreme Court and the Australian Government as non-compelling and fundamentally flawed. Scholars too have been calling for higher quality research on this issue. The current study seeks to answer this call by providing longitudinal data on youth aggression and dating violence as potential consequences of violent video game exposure using well-validated clinical outcome measures and controlling for other relevant predictors of youth aggression.
Method A sample of , mainly Hispanic youth, were tested at 3 intervals, an initial interview, and 1-year and 3-year intervals. Results Results indicated that exposure to video game violence was not related to any of the negative outcomes.

Exerpts This paper explores how our physical appearance influences our relationships with others. The authors feel that research into physical attractiveness has been lacking because sociilogists have disregarded is as an important variable or have been uneasy in exploring the deterministic consequences of beauty. However, the authors feel that attractiveness is an influential variable in understanding social phenomena. Physical Attractiveness and Heterosexual Attraction Matching Hypothesis One hypothesis is that people will select for romantic liasons those who are of their own social desirability level.
A person’s romantic aspirations are influenced by their overall goal aspirations. However, it also depends on the probability of relations — a person of lower social desirability may expect a rejection if they approach someone much higher than they are. One study in the 60’s paired up people at a dance. They found that the only determinant that predicted the degree of “liking” of their date and desire for subsequent dates was physical attractivness.
Another study found a 0. Perception of physical attractiveness was better correlated than “similar interests” or “character”. Another study by the author found support of the “matching principle”.

Overview[ edit ] In the scientific method , an experiment is an empirical procedure that arbitrates competing models or hypotheses. However, an experiment may also aim to answer a “what-if” question, without a specific expectation about what the experiment reveals, or to confirm prior results. If an experiment is carefully conducted, the results usually either support or disprove the hypothesis. According to some philosophies of science , an experiment can never “prove” a hypothesis, it can only add support.
On the other hand, an experiment that provides a counterexample can disprove a theory or hypothesis, but a theory can always be salvaged by appropriate ad hoc modifications at the expense of simplicity. An experiment must also control the possible confounding factors —any factors that would mar the accuracy or repeatability of the experiment or the ability to interpret the results. In engineering and the physical sciences, experiments are a primary component of the scientific method.
They are used to test theories and hypotheses about how physical processes work under particular conditions e. Typically, experiments in these fields focus on replication of identical procedures in hopes of producing identical results in each replication. Random assignment is uncommon. In medicine and the social sciences , the prevalence of experimental research varies widely across disciplines.
When used, however, experiments typically follow the form of the clinical trial , where experimental units usually individual human beings are randomly assigned to a treatment or control condition where one or more outcomes are assessed. There are various differences in experimental practice in each of the branches of science. For example, agricultural research frequently uses randomized experiments e.

Human Evolution Evidence Evidence of Evolution Scientists have discovered a wealth of evidence concerning human evolution , and this evidence comes in many forms. Thousands of human fossils enable researchers and students to study the changes that occurred in brain and body size, locomotion, diet, and other aspects regarding the way of life of early human species over the past 6 million years. Millions of stone tools, figurines and paintings, footprints, and other traces of human behavior in the prehistoric record tell about where and how early humans lived and when certain technological innovations were invented.
Study of human genetics show how closely related we are to other primates — in fact, how connected we are with all other organisms — and can indicate the prehistoric migrations of our species, Homo sapiens, all over the world. Advances in the dating of fossils and artifacts help determine the age of those remains, which contributes to the big picture of when different milestones in becoming human evolved.
Exciting scientific discoveries continually add to the broader and deeper public knowledge of human evolution.
